“THIS IS A HOMECOMING FOR ME AND MY WIFE, MAYA. MY CULINARY JOURNEY HAS ALWAYS BEEN INFLUENCED BY OUR FAMILY ROOTS HERE IN ETHIOPIA AND
MARCUS ADDIS CELEBRATES THAT HERITAGE IN EVERY DETAIL.”

-CHEF MARCUS SAMUELSSON

Global Tastemaker

An influential figure in food, media, and fashion, Chef Marcus draws upon his Swedish and Ethiopian roots in the kitchen. His robust use of spice comes from his Ethiopian heritage, and his appreciation of fresh, local foods comes from growing up in Sweden, under the loving eyes of his chef grandmother.

Community

Chef Marcus is committed to bringing opportunities and broader training to the local community. Which is why we’ve created a partnership with a local hospitality and culinary training program to establish growth, inclusion, and opportunity for the surrounding community and broader Ethiopia. Tourism Training Institute is a program our partners at the Hyatt Addis Ababa currently works with and they will be working with Marcus Addis restaurant on a new educational partnership.

Music & Art

Marcus Addis amplifies Ethiopian and African artists by partnering with Addis Fine Art Gallery to create a rotating, contemporary curation of visual art.

Our music will reflect the modern growth of Addis Ababa with up-and-coming DJs and afrobeats with international touches infused throughout the programming.

FUAD MOHAMMED

Artist-in-Residence

Fuad's oil paintings emerge from his upbringing in, watching women gather outside the church walls, setting up vegetable stalls and talking to each other. He is inspired by the outfits women wear for holidays, the vibrant colors, and floral decorations.

These paintings are defined by the warmth they radiate. Rich and layered, Fuad has chosen to present the economically marginalized people, children and people with disabilities. The setting of these works is vague, with no real boundaries between these figures at home, at the market, or outside churches.

Instead, the composition hints at the sound, smell, and feel of these locations, transporting the viewer to this imaginary amalgam spaces. The items that surround these figures are ubiquitous around churches -tufa wax candles, prayer books- alongside vegetables available for sale in small bunches. Initially influenced by African masks and drawing from his non-figurative background, Fuad has playfully anthropomorphized jerry cans.

Fuad ((b. 1994)) graduated from Addis Ababa University School of Fine Art and Design in 2015.
